The man in front has a walking stick and the posture of someone who has decided, without much evidence, that he knows exactly where this ridge leads. He is dressed for a Sunday errand rather than a climb, cream trousers and all, which was standard practice for the amateur rockhound of the era, a hobbyist who treated geology as something you could do in the clothes you already owned.
Behind him two more climbers are on all fours, hauling themselves up the loose scree with their hands, having apparently skipped the planning stage entirely. Desert prospecting for minerals and fossils was a genuine mid-century pastime, sold to weekend hobbyists through club newsletters and gas-station rock shops, and it rewarded enthusiasm over technique every time.
Nobody here has a rope, a helmet, or a second thought about the grade of the slope, because in 1960s recreational geology the only required equipment was confidence and a willingness to ruin a good pair of shoes.
The historian's note
Recreational rockhounding and amateur fossil collecting expanded rapidly across the American Southwest in the postwar decades, driven by new highway access, surplus camping gear, and a hobbyist culture organized around local gem-and-mineral societies. Weekend trips into desert badlands and eroded hillsides were common family and club activities, often undertaken with minimal specialized equipment.
The scene documents this informal, non-professional style of fieldwork typical of the period: participants in ordinary clothing, hand tools rather than technical gear, and a steep unmarked slope chosen for its exposed rock rather than for ease of access. Such outings left behind private photographic records rather than institutional ones, since the collecting was recreational and rarely tied to any surveyed or permitted site.
