Highway engineers, in their infinite wisdom, determined this specific section of Earth was suitable for high-speed travel, directly beside a hillside that had clearly been through a few things. The visible strata are the result of countless millennia of Earth’s crust doing whatever it felt like, primarily involving large-scale ash deposition.
Each layer represents an ancient event of spectacular violence, now neatly displayed like pages in a textbook that nobody reads from their car. The twin yellow lines confidently declare this thin strip of asphalt to be a permanent fixture, despite overwhelming geological evidence to the contrary just a few feet away.
It's a curious human trait, this belief that our neatly paved surfaces can withstand the planet’s long-term decorating plans. This particular arrangement will likely remain until the hillside decides it needs a new configuration, probably around the time someone finally invents a comfortable car seat.
The historian's note
This image from the 1970s depicts a road cut through a hillside, revealing distinct geological strata. The visible layers are consistent with tephra (volcanic ash) and pumice deposits, indicating past explosive volcanic activity in the region.
Such formations are common in areas with a history of Quaternary volcanism, where successive layers of ejected material accumulate over vast periods. These exposed cross-sections provide valuable insights into regional geological history, including the timing and scale of ancient eruptions.
They are often studied by geologists to reconstruct paleoenvironments and establish eruption chronologies, offering a tangible record of Earth's powerful dynamic processes.
