A car has climbed into white stone mountains and found itself on a road that looks less like a road than a scar the landscape tolerates. The chalky surface, the raw cut banks on either side, and the scattered sage-green brush clinging to exposed slopes all suggest this is either a very new road or a very reluctant one—somewhere in the American West where federal highway money was meeting geology that preferred not to cooperate. The 1950s were optimistic about roads; the decade believed every valley could be connected, every canyon bypassed if you had enough asphalt and dynamite. This appears to be exactly the kind of route that tested that faith, a mountain pass that some engineer declared passable and some construction crew proved him right, at great expense and questionable durability. The vehicle in the foreground is partially visible, roof and bumper marking the moment before the driver discovered what lay ahead: a landscape so bleached and hostile that the road itself seems to be dissolving back into it.
