A line of tour buses pulled over on a remote highway means it's time for people to exit the air-conditioned comfort and stare intently at a rock face. This was a common travel activity in the 1970s, where exposed geological features were presented as inherently fascinating. Many individuals took this responsibility very seriously.
One diligent sightseer has even attempted to scale a portion of the cut, perhaps hoping for a closer look at a particularly compelling mineral deposit or just testing the structural integrity of the roadside. Others simply mill about, fulfilling their obligation to observe nature.
The collective effort to appreciate what the Earth had laid bare for them suggests a time before every scenic vista came with a gift shop and a predictable photo op. They were simply there to look, and perhaps absorb some knowledge, or at least look like they were.
