Someone in the parks department decided the view needed a label, so a carved wooden sign now stands between the visitor and the thing they came to look at. Prospect Point had been informing tourists of its own name since the early part of the century, on the sound civic theory that a scenic overlook without signage is just a cliff.
The historian's note
Prospect Point is the highest point in Stanley Park, on the northern tip of the Vancouver peninsula, overlooking First Narrows. The Lions Gate Bridge, opened in 1938 to connect Vancouver to the North Shore municipalities, is visible spanning the narrows toward the North Shore mountains.
