You arrive at the ancient city, probably after a long bus ride. The columns frame the view perfectly, almost as if someone arranged them for your convenience. It's a testament to good design that ruins can still manage to look important, even after two thousand years of neglect and volcanic ash.
In the distance, Mount Vesuvius looms, just like it did for the original residents. People come from all over the world to look at the remains of a city that made a critical error in judgment regarding real estate. The irony is generally lost somewhere between the souvenir stand and the next tour group.
In the 1970s, visiting historical sites involved fewer selfie sticks and more quiet contemplation, or at least the appearance of it. One can imagine tourists politely standing in line, waiting for their turn to gaze upon the remains of a civilization that thought it had all the answers, much like every civilization thinks.
The historian's note
This photograph captures a view of the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, Italy, during the 1970s. The image is framed through the remains of a large structure, likely part of the forum or a temple complex, looking towards the plains of the city and the imposing presence of Mount Vesuvius in the background.
Pompeii was an ancient Roman town-city near modern Naples, in the Campania region of Italy. It was mostly destroyed and buried under 4 to 6 meters (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. The city's rediscovery in the 18th century and subsequent excavations have provided an unparalleled snapshot of daily life in the Roman Empire.
The site continues to be a major archaeological and tourist attraction, offering unique insights into Roman urban planning, architecture, art, and societal structures. Its preservation under volcanic material allows for a detailed understanding of a specific moment in history, making it invaluable for historical study.
