Door County figured out a long time ago that its selling point was the view, and this overlook above Green Bay delivers exactly that — a mown slope dropping into dense hardwood forest, with the flat-topped bluff of the peninsula's eastern shore pushing into the water in the middle distance. Every summer, roughly a million people drive up to Wisconsin's thumb to see this, rent a kayak they will not return on time, and take a picture from almost exactly this spot.
What the camera caught without meaning to is the way the scene refuses to be improved. The trees are not dramatic. The water is not sparkling. The bluff sits there, covered in trees, doing nothing in particular. And yet Door County's entire tourism economy has run on this view since before the interstate made it accessible, because the upper Midwest in summer produces a green so saturated and a sky so gray-white that the combination reads, to anyone who grew up there, as the specific color of vacation.
Someone stood here in 2002 with a camera and pressed the shutter, confident the result would justify the drive. The peninsula looked back, unchanged, and declined to comment.
