Someone in the National Park Service decided, back in 1904, that the way to make tourists feel rugged was to build them a hotel out of whole lodgepole pines and one enormous volcanic-rock chimney, and by the 1950s the strategy was still working. The inn sits here buried to its window ledges in snow, the kind of accumulation that meant the building spent its winters officially closed and unofficially trusting gravity and good carpentry to hold the roofline.

A deer stands near the treeline doing what deer do when the humans have gone home for the season, which is take over the grounds without paying for the privilege. The snow-loaded pines in front of the lodge look less like landscaping and more like a second, smaller building made of ice, proof that whoever photographed this stood in weather no sensible off-season guest would have chosen.

The inn kept its log-and-shingle silhouette exactly as designed, on the theory that rustic grandeur photographs better than practicality, and judging by how well it has survived every Yellowstone winter since, the theory held up better than most park budgets.
