Whoever built this house in the 1920s or 1930s had decided that a Midwestern residential street was the right place to invoke an English country manor, and by the 1950s the neighborhood had long since accepted the Tudor Revival brick, the steep gabled roofline, and the arched front door as simply what houses looked like. The white lattice trellis mounted to the facade, bare of its climbing vine for winter, suggests that in warmer months the owner was also managing a decorative gardening program, which in the postwar suburbs was less an aesthetic choice than a civic obligation.
The chimney rising from the brick end of the house is the kind of working chimney that still meant something in the 1950s, when the furnace in the basement and the fireplace in the living room were both earning their keep on days like this one. Snow has covered the front walk down to its last two exposed stepping stones, which remain dark and cleared, the reliable sign of a household that takes its responsibilities seriously.
The house photographs as the aspirational object it was built to be — solid, layered, slightly more architectural than its neighbors required. The family inside almost certainly believed it would look this good forever, which, for a brick house on a quiet street in the American Midwest, was not the worst bet they ever made.
