By the 1960s, seeing Niagara Falls meant seeing it from behind a windshield, then getting out to lean on a railing for exactly as long as it took to confirm the falls were still falling. The parking lot here is arranged with the same unspoken hierarchy as a church social, sedans and wagons nosed in at careful angles, each one a small monument to a family's stake in the postwar economy. Tourism at the falls had by then become a kind of civic duty for the American middle class, the honeymoon-capital reputation doing double duty as both cliché and obligation.
The visitors themselves are almost an afterthought in their own vacation photograph, small dark shapes strung along the fence while the real spectacle roars behind them uninterrupted by human opinion. Horseshoe Falls curls away on the left, American Falls drops straight on the right, and between them sits an observation tower built specifically so people could pay to see, from slightly higher up, the exact same thing they were already looking at for free. Nobody in the lot seems to find this arrangement odd, which is its own kind of monument.
What the water was doing in this decade, it had been doing for ten thousand years without a parking permit. The cars will be traded in, the coats will go out of style, and the falls will keep collecting quarters from people convinced their visit is the one that matters.
