By the 1950s a paved road through Glacier National Park came with white-tipped guide posts instead of guardrails, on the theory that a driver skidding toward a ravine would be comforted by a series of small painted markers rather than actually stopped by anything. The road curls along the base of the valley like it was drawn by someone optimistic about postwar tourism and pessimistic about snowplow budgets, which was a fair description of most park infrastructure at the time.

The pyramid of bare rock and lingering snow at the head of the valley did not care that a family from Ohio had driven three days to see it, and it would look exactly the same the day after they left, which is the quiet insult built into every national park vista. Visitors in the 1950s treated a good mountain the way they treated a good roadside diner: worth the detour, photographed once, and never really understood.

Somewhere below the tree line a station wagon was almost certainly idling at a pullout, engine ticking, while someone loaded a box camera and assured the children this was educational.
