The historian's note
This photograph, taken in the 1970s, captures the highly detailed miniature replica of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, a prominent exhibit within Madurodam, a miniature park located in The Hague, Netherlands. Madurodam opened in 1952 and features 1:25 scale models of famous Dutch landmarks, cities, and industries, offering visitors a comprehensive overview of the country.
The Schiphol Airport model was a continuously updated centerpiece, reflecting the rapid developments in aviation during the 20th century. The aircraft models visible, such as Boeing 747s, 707s, and 727s, along with specific airline liveries like KLM, Lufthansa, Qantas, and TAP Portugal, accurately represent the dominant commercial aircraft and major international carriers of the 1970s.
