On the image

When people decided they needed something from underground, they often committed fully to the idea. Here, entire mountains were just rearranged, layer by tedious layer, because a few ounces of metal seemed like a good trade for the original topography. The sheer effort involved could power a small country, or at least build a very large hole.

This particular excavation project looks like someone decided to peel the earth back, one giant strip at a time, until they found what they were looking for. The terracing suggests a methodical approach, even if gravity occasionally decided to rearrange a section on its own terms, reminding everyone who was truly in charge of the landscape.

What started as a geological feature became a permanent scar on the planet's surface, a monument to human ingenuity and short-term quarterly profits. The trees on the rim probably witnessed the whole thing, quietly judging the ambition.

The historian's note

This image depicts a large-scale open-pit mining operation, a common method for extracting various mineral resources, including copper, gold, iron, and coal, during the 20th century.
