The historian's note
The rock formation shown, deeply weathered and pale against darker surrounding material, is typical of granite or volcanic tuff outcrops found in arid regions of the western United States, where differential erosion carves boulders into rounded, arch-like shapes over long geologic timescales. Such formations were common roadside attractions for mid-century motorists traveling scenic highways through California, Arizona, and Nevada.
The man's attire, a short-sleeved button shirt, canvas trousers, and a straw hat with a field bag slung crossbody, reflects standard casual outdoor dress for American men on recreational travel during the 1960s. Slide photography of this kind, taken on personal road trips to natural landmarks, was a widespread hobby of the period, encouraged by inexpensive color film and increasing automobile tourism to national parks and scenic backroads.
No specific site can be confirmed from the visual evidence alone, though the geology and dress are consistent with a domestic American vacation destination of the decade.
