Silver Springs, Florida had solved the problem of underwater filming by offering the clearest fresh water in North America, and MGM had noticed. A sign on the dock announces the production of Jupiter's Darling with Esther Williams, which gave the attraction something better than a historical marker: a genuine Hollywood endorsement nailed to a post. Two crew members stand at the water's edge attending to equipment, performing the unglamorous work that makes aquatic spectacle possible. The glass-bottomed boats that were Silver Springs' original draw are moored nearby, briefly sharing their dock with an industry that had decided Florida's artesian springs looked better on Technicolor stock than the studio tank in Culver City. Silver Springs understood exactly what it had — and made sure every visitor standing on that dock knew it too.
