A crowd of parents and small children mills outside a white-pillared pavilion advertising the Kiddie Roto Whip and the Kiddie Midget Train — two rides whose entire business model rested on the postwar assumption that enough people had recently had children to fill any structure with the word 'kiddie' on it. The adults are dressed for a real outing: coats, plaid jackets, a toddler passed between arms like a relay baton. Amusement parks in the 1950s occupied a specific slot in the family calendar, neither cheap nor glamorous, somewhere between a reward and an obligation, and the parents here have the look of people fulfilling both at once. The Roto Whip was a scaled-down version of the Whip — a ride that spun small cars around an oval track — designed so children could be thrilled at speeds their parents found embarrassing. Nobody in this crowd is aware they are standing at the exact high-water mark of the regional amusement park, a few years before the interstate highway system and a certain Florida swamp would reorganize the entire industry around a single company's idea of fun.
