The historian's note

This photograph depicts the distinctive hoodoo and tent rock formations within what is now Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument in Sandoval County, New Mexico, captured during the 1970s. These geological features are composed primarily of pumice and ash deposits from volcanic eruptions occurring 6 to 7 million years ago.

The conical shapes, often capped by a harder, erosion-resistant boulder, are the result of differential erosion by wind and water on the softer underlying rock layers. This process creates slot canyons and sculpted pinnacles that are a significant example of arid landform development.

Established as a National Monument in 2001, the site is managed by the Bureau of Land Management and is important for its geological significance, archaeological resources, and cultural ties to the nearby Pueblo de Cochiti.
