These geological formations in the New Mexico desert stand with the quiet confidence of objects that have been eroding for millions of years and expect to continue doing so long after humans have forgotten what they were worried about today. Each pinnacle appears to be a small, independent kingdom, asserting its shape against the forces of wind and water, a strategy that has proven remarkably effective over geological timescales.
One can imagine an early geologist, upon first seeing these "tent rocks," feeling a profound personal connection, perhaps even believing the formations had waited specifically for their scientific naming. This is a common human trait when encountering large, indifferent natural wonders.
They will continue to stand, or fall, on their own schedule, providing a stark reminder that some things simply exist without needing our approval or understanding, an ongoing masterclass in geological indifference.
The historian's note
This photograph depicts the distinctive hoodoo and tent rock formations within what is now Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument in Sandoval County, New Mexico, captured during the 1970s. These geological features are composed primarily of pumice and ash deposits from volcanic eruptions occurring 6 to 7 million years ago.
The conical shapes, often capped by a harder, erosion-resistant boulder, are the result of differential erosion by wind and water on the softer underlying rock layers. This process creates slot canyons and sculpted pinnacles that are a significant example of arid landform development.
Established as a National Monument in 2001, the site is managed by the Bureau of Land Management and is important for its geological significance, archaeological resources, and cultural ties to the nearby Pueblo de Cochiti.
