Someone in the 1960s pointed a camera at a wall and got a lesson in humility instead. The Inca masons who built this corner of Machu Picchu did not believe in mortar, on the theory that a stone cut precisely enough needs no glue, and five centuries of earthquakes have mostly proven them right. The pale granite outcrop shouldering into the wall was not tidied away or leveled off, because the builders preferred to work around the mountain rather than pretend it wasn't there.
By the 1960s the site had become a fixture of the new jet-age travel circuit, a place ambitious tourists flew to Cuzco and rode a bus up to see, cameras loaded with slide film and expectations shaped by National Geographic spreads. Visitors posed against walls like this one assuming the ruins had simply always looked this way, weathered and moss-fed and picturesque, when in fact each lichen-streaked block had been quarried, dragged, and fitted by hand without benefit of iron tools or the wheel.
The empty doorways and window openings behind the outcrop once framed rooms with roofs, floors, and presumably opinions about their neighbors, all of that domestic detail now reduced to silhouette against a sky that has outlasted every human argument that ever occurred beneath it.
