People built houses right at the foot of the enormous mountains in the 1970s, operating under the quaint assumption that gravity would consistently favor their structures. The mountains, meanwhile, appeared content to maintain their ancient schedule of not caring at all about human real estate.
From a hotel balcony in places like Grindelwald, one could admire several thousand feet of rock and snow, a silent reminder of why you paid for the excellent view. This was the era when a mountain panorama was considered a luxury, not merely a backdrop for the next fleeting digital self-portrait, suggesting actual contemplation might have occurred.
The grand scale of the Swiss Alps ensured that even with all the human infrastructure below, the dominant feature remained geology, immune to corporate efficiency drives or quarterly reports. It's a testament to the unchanging power of things that existed long before 'synergy' was a word.
The historian's note
This image depicts Grindelwald, a prominent village in the Bernese Alps, Switzerland, captured during the 1970s. The foreground features traditional Swiss chalet architecture, characterized by steep roofs and timber construction, set against the dramatic backdrop of snow-capped mountains.
During the mid-20th century, Grindelwald solidified its reputation as a major destination for mountaineering and winter sports, attracting an international clientele. The development seen in the village reflects the sustained growth in tourism infrastructure to support these activities.
The visible peaks are part of the larger Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage site, a region recognized for its exceptional natural beauty and its role in the history of mountaineering. The village itself serves as a key access point to many of the area's iconic mountains and glaciers.
