Someone paid good money for permanence here. The polished granite marker for Franjo i Marija Božiček has the confident bulk of a family that expected to be remembered specifically, not lumped in with the wooden crosses leaning in the background like an afterthought of an earlier, poorer decade.
The raked gravel bed in front, still bare of grass, suggests the plot was newly finished when the picture was taken, the stone doing its job before the ground had even settled into forgetting. Around it the cemetery shows its usual mixed economy of remembrance: a driftwood cross propped against a neighboring monument, a workman's jacket flung over someone else's grave marker as if death were simply the next job site.
A Croatian burial ground in the 1950s ran on the same logic as everywhere else - the living build monuments to outlast doubt, then walk away and let the weeds argue with the stone. The jacket on the far monument suggests at least one visitor treated the errand as ordinary maintenance rather than reverence, which, eventually, it always becomes.
