General Motors sent its Electro-Motive Division on the road in the 1950s to demonstrate that the future of American passenger rail was lightweight, diesel-powered, and built by the same company that was also selling you a Cadillac. The car on display here wears the optimistic livery of the era — brushed aluminum flanks, an orange accent stripe, rounded windows — and carries a blue oval medallion announcing 'General Motors Lightweight Train' with the confidence of a company that had recently won World War II and saw no reason to stop there. GM's Parade of Progress and related promotional tours rolled through American cities and state fairgrounds throughout the decade, parking next to exhibits about atomic energy and synthetic fabrics, all of it pointing toward a tomorrow that the railroads themselves would not quite manage to inhabit. The partially visible script on the Cadillac display or banner in the upper left confirms this is a coordinated GM promotional event, not a working terminal. What the medallion does not mention is that within fifteen years the passenger trains GM was here championing would be hemorrhaging riders to the interstate highways GM was simultaneously lobbying Congress to fund.
