A model railroad enthusiast has constructed a Pennsylvania Railroad layout with the seriousness of a man who believes that miniature commerce requires the same discipline as the real thing. A streamlined Pennsylvania tender and freight cars move through a landscape of hand-painted buildings, signal poles, and carefully ballasted track, each element placed with the conviction that this small world obeys the same rules as the actual rail network it copies. The buildings—a white station house, an orange warehouse, a modest depot—sit at angles that suggest a real town, which suggests the builder spent winter evenings studying photographs and timetables to get it right. The track curves with the confidence of someone who has consulted a surveyor's manual. In the 1950s, model railroading was not a hobby for children; it was a gentleman's pursuit, proof that a man could create order and function in miniature, that he understood engineering, that he had patience and taste. The photograph catches him at the moment of having built something that works the way the world should—which is to say, the way it never does.
