A girl of perhaps ten or eleven poses against a rough-textured stone wall in the white-and-navy sailor dress that was, in the 1950s, the default costume for any occasion a parent considered worth photographing — first communions, school portraits, visits to relatives, and anything else that required a child to look respectable without the expense of something new. The sailor collar had been a children's wardrobe staple since the late Victorian era, carried forward by sheer institutional momentum into a decade that was otherwise busy inventing synthetic fibres and television, and nobody paused to ask why landlocked children were dressed for the bridge of a frigate. She is smiling the smile of someone who was asked to smile, which is close to a real smile but has a faint quality of compliance about it, the expression of a child who has learned that cooperating with the camera is faster than not cooperating. The wall behind her is unadorned and slightly monumental, suggesting this was someone's idea of a serious portrait rather than a casual snapshot, which is to say that someone put real effort into producing a photograph that looks entirely ordinary.
