A long-haired ginger tabby has located the one rectangle of afternoon sun falling across a small floral-patterned rug and arranged himself inside it with the precision of a contractor who has read the blueprints. In the 1950s the domestic cat was completing its negotiated transition from barn utility animal to full household sovereign, a shift accomplished without the cat making a single concession. The household around him is invisible — swallowed by shadow — which is exactly how he prefers the power dynamic. One paw is extended with the casual authority of someone who has signed the lease and considers the terms very much in his favour. Whoever pointed a camera at this scene understood, at least intuitively, that the cat was not a subject to be photographed so much as a dignitary granting a sitting.
