Someone with institutional authority decided that rows of metal folding chairs, arranged in a long curving line along a brick path under royal palms, constituted proper seating for an outdoor attraction, and several dozen vacationing adults agreed with him. This is the posture of mid-century American leisure: dressed for a Sunday that isn't Sunday, sitting patiently for a show that hasn't started, because the brochure promised something worth waiting for.
The American flag stands at half-attention near the far tree line, doing the quiet work flags did at every Florida tourist stop of the era, which was to reassure visitors that spectacle and patriotism could share the same lawn. Nobody in the audience appears to be looking at anything yet, which is the honest condition of most staged entertainment before it begins.
Behind them, a low pink building with an arched breezeway suggests the kind of resort or botanical park built to look permanently pleasant, a promise that required constant gardening and very little architecture. The whole arrangement — chairs, palms, flag, pink stucco — is the period's idea of paradise: manageable, ticketed, and shaded just enough to keep people from complaining.
