Somewhere in the citrus belt of Southern California — the kind of hilly grove that covered inland valleys from Ventura to San Bernardino before the subdivisions arrived — a family has stopped to walk the rows and hold lemons as though this proves something. The women are dressed in the full casual register of the 1950s leisure outing: cat-eye sunglasses, pedal pushers in red, a cotton blouse that would not survive a single day of actual agricultural labor. One of them has raised a lemon above her head, which is the universal gesture of a person who has just discovered that lemons grow on trees and wants everyone to confirm they are seeing this.

The hired man with the shovel at the back of the frame is the only person present who is not on vacation. He is standing at a polite distance from the visitors, which is the distance a working man maintains when the owners or their guests wander through to be charmed by the operation he maintains year-round. The child beside him holds his own lemon with the seriousness of someone who has been given a task he intends to complete correctly.

This was the tail end of the era when a California citrus grove was still a destination worth photographing, a thing to show people back home as evidence of abundance. Within a decade, most of these groves would be gone, replaced by the tract housing that turned Southern California into the place people moved to instead of visited.
