A lone figure descends the vast stone steps of an ancient theater, a journey of several minutes just to reach the orchestra pit. This was how people explored antiquity in the 1970s: a simple striped shirt, sensible trousers, and a willingness to simply walk around something built for tens of thousands.
The sheer scale of the structure, designed for grand public spectacles and rhetorical flourishes, now hosts little more than a single tourist. The acoustics, once tuned for a speaker's voice to carry to the farthest row, probably just amplify the sound of one's own footsteps.
After two millennia, the structure remains. The transient visitor, momentarily dwarfed by history, provides the briefest human counterpoint to the enduring stone. One can only imagine what the original Roman builders would have thought of such a quiet audience.
The historian's note
This photograph captures the Great Theater of Ephesus, a colossal Roman-era amphitheater located in what is now modern-day Turkey. Built originally during the Hellenistic period and expanded significantly under Roman rule, particularly during the reigns of Emperors Claudius and Trajan, it could accommodate an estimated 25,000 spectators.
The theater was a central public venue in the ancient city of Ephesus, used for plays, concerts, gladiatorial contests, and religious and political gatherings. Its design allowed for remarkable acoustic properties and provided panoramic views of the city and its harbor, which has since silted up.
By the 1970s, archaeological excavations had revealed much of the theater's grandeur, making it a prominent historical site and a major destination for international tourists exploring the remnants of classical civilization in Anatolia. The site continues to be a focus of ongoing archaeological research and preservation.
