Two men make their way across a rockfall on a high Andean slope, and only one of them dressed for it. The man in the white shirt and dark trousers looks like he left a office or a church service an hour earlier, which in the 1960s was often exactly the case, since technical hiking clothes were a concept that had not yet reached most travelers who found themselves this far above sea level.
His companion, in a jacket and cap with a bag slung over one shoulder, moves with the unbothered gait of a local who has crossed this exact stretch of loose stone more times than he could count. The other man tests each rock before committing his weight, the universal posture of a visitor discovering that scenery and terrain are not the same thing.
Below them the boulders give way to a long green mountainside, the kind of mossy, waterlogged grass that only grows where the air is thin and the rain never really stops. The whole scene is a small, quiet lesson in the difference between people who live on a mountain and people who are merely visiting it.
The historian's note
This is a high-altitude Andean landscape, most consistent with the highland grasslands of the Peru-Bolivia mountain corridor that saw growing overland and trekking travel through the 1960s. Foot and mule trails through scree and rockfall zones like the one shown were the standard route between highland settlements before wider road networks reached these elevations.
By the 1960s, the region was beginning to draw increasing numbers of outside visitors, drawn by archaeological sites and mountain scenery, often traveling with local guides or porters accustomed to the terrain. The contrast between a visitor's ordinary clothing and a local guide's practical dress, visible here, reflects the informal and improvised nature of early highland tourism before specialized trekking gear became standard equipment.
