What was planted here as permanent seemed entirely so at the time.
The historian's note
Colonial citrus and palm cultivation in Mediterranean and North African territories was a major economic initiative during the 1940s, particularly in French North Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia) and British and Italian holdings. These mixed-crop orchards—combining European-origin citrus with native date palms—represented the administrative and agricultural philosophy of interwar and wartime colonialism: the belief that European scientific farming could improve indigenous land and generate export wealth for the metropolitan power. The cultivation method shown here, with young citrus in geometric rows below established palms, was standard practice on estates managed by colonial agricultural services. By the 1950s and 1960s, these same territories would be sites of independence struggles; many such estates were abandoned, seized, or replanted under nationalist governments.
