"Children of a Common Mother" is the motto carved into the Peace Arch at Blaine, Washington — a monument erected in 1921 on the U.S.-Canada border to celebrate a century of peace between the two nations, on the quietly optimistic theory that shared Anglo ancestry was a sufficient foundation for permanent goodwill. The American flag flies from the taller pole; the lower carries what appears to be a Canadian Red Ensign, the flag Canada used before it adopted the maple leaf design in 1965, which places this firmly in the decade the cataloguer confirms.
The arch straddles the actual border line, meaning that at the moment this was taken, the structure itself was simultaneously in two countries — a fact that delighted civic boosters and meant almost nothing to the customs agents working nearby. The 1950s were the high-water mark for this kind of fraternal monument, when the idea that two nations might share a border without fortifying it still struck people as worth commemorating in neoclassical stonework.
What the camera caught, framing the pediment tight against the open sky, is the arch doing exactly what it was built to do: look like a declaration. Whether anyone driving through paused to read the motto is a separate question.
