The sentinel walks his mat in twenty-one steps, turns, waits twenty-one seconds, and turns again, a ritual so precisely engineered that tourists in cat's-eye sunglasses and clutch purses line up behind a rope to watch a man do almost nothing with total conviction. The rifle rides on the shoulder away from the tomb, a detail the guard understands as a gesture of protection and the crowd understands mainly as good posture.
Behind the rope, the 1960s uniform of the American tourist is on full display: the men in narrow ties and short-sleeve shirts, the women in gloves and low pumps, everyone assuming that dressing for Arlington was still a civic obligation rather than an option. Someone in the second row has a camera raised, confident that a single snapshot could hold still a movement designed never to stop.
The white stone visible at the edge of the frame belongs to the memorial precinct itself, a backdrop so familiar from newsreels that the crowd barely glances at it, saving their attention for the one moving part of the whole scene.
