A boy of about ten lies prone on the grass in a public park, arms extended, pushing a medicine ball away from his chest in what he has been instructed is exercise. Behind him, scattered across the lawn, are the artifacts of mid-century recreational supervision: a tennis racket, other children in the distance, benches where adults sit and watch. The boy is dressed in an orange shirt and blue shorts, his posture precise, his attention absolute. In the 1950s, parents believed that children needed to be taught fitness the way they were taught manners—through directed activity in open spaces, with equipment, under observation, as if discipline applied to the body would produce character. The medicine ball, wooden and heavy, was the tool of this small philosophy. What the boy could not have known was that he was performing for a camera, and that someday his ordinary afternoon of doing what he was told would be the evidence of a vanished assumption: that a child's job was to submit to improvement.
