On the image
Someone in the 1970s decided this ancient fresco, depicting a dramatic historical moment, needed to be captured for posterity, despite ambient light conditions that would challenge a lighthouse keeper. The resulting image faithfully records both the artistic achievement and the limits of consumer camera technology from an era where everyone owned a camera but few understood how to use it in a dimly lit, priceless hall.
The ornate gold framing suggests the importance of the subject, or at least the importance of whoever commissioned the gold. People often assume that if something is old and gold, it must be significant, and sometimes they are right.
This particular upward angle, looking towards the high ceilings of a grand hall, reveals the determination of the photographer. They knew what they were looking at was important, even if their snapshot would later become a hazy, slightly purple record of their visit.
The historian's note
This photograph, taken in the 1970s, captures a section of the frescoes adorning the Borgia Apartments within the Apostolic Palace of Vatican City. These Renaissance frescoes, primarily executed by Bernardino di Betto, known as Pinturicchio, and his workshop between 1492 and 1494, were commissioned by Pope Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borgia).
The frescoes depict a variety of religious and allegorical scenes, often subtly incorporating references to Pope Alexander VI and the Borgia family. They served to glorify the Pope and illustrate his reign, transforming the private papal apartments into a testament to his power and cultural patronage.
The Borgia Apartments remain a significant example of High Renaissance decorative art, offering insight into the political and artistic climate of late 15th-century Rome and the complex legacy of the Borgia papacy.
