Somewhere in a suburban basement, a man has built an entire civilization out of dyed sawdust and balsa wood, and he has done it with the same seriousness other men reserved for their actual mortgages. The water tower stands guard over a town that has a church, a farm, a diner, and a caboose yard but conspicuously no cemetery, because in the world of model railroading nobody ever dies, they just get re-routed to the freight siding.
The farmer's livestock stand frozen mid-graze on felt pasture, the trees are wire armatures dipped in more dyed sawdust, and the whole arrangement runs on the confident 1950s assumption that a grown man's hobby needed its own zoning board. Every building was placed with the fussy precision of a man convinced that verisimilitude mattered enormously to an audience of exactly himself and, on a good weekend, one visiting brother-in-law.
The train idles on the track mid-run, three cars deep, waiting for a hand that has stepped away to answer the actual telephone. It is a small, complete world, built at a scale where nothing goes wrong, which is presumably the whole point.
