She has just made a point, the kind that requires a pointed finger and a raised eyebrow, and the camera has caught her mid-argument rather than mid-smile. The folding lawn chair beneath her, webbed in orange and black nylon, was the great suburban furniture innovation of the decade, promising a household could conjure a living room anywhere there was a slab of concrete and an extension cord for the radio.

Behind her a pair of legs strides past in patent-leather heels, someone's daughter cutting through the adults' territory on her way to more interesting business elsewhere in the yard. The whole scene has the loose choreography of a Sunday cookout, the kind of gathering that ran on lemonade, gossip, and the assumption that everyone owned a set of matching aluminum chairs.

A plaid picnic blanket is folded over a white bench at the frame's edge, waiting its turn, while the patio itself, poured sometime after the war, cuts a clean diagonal through what used to be just yard. It is a picture of a woman entirely certain she is right about something, and confident enough in the moment to let a stranger's camera prove it.
