Sometime in the 1950s, an American homeowner declared the fireplace wall finished and stood back satisfied. The painted fieldstone, the gold-sprayed laurel wreath hung above the mantel, the brass lamp with its cylindrical drum shade — every element was a deliberate choice made by someone who had read the decorating pages carefully and concluded that gold was the color of a home that had arrived.

The Christmas stockings hung from the mantel rail have the hand-sewn look of objects kept in a box eleven months a year and treated as heirlooms on the twelfth. The fireplace itself is screened with a large fan-shaped summer cover, which means the fire was decorative in theory only — the room was heated by other means, and the hearth was now primarily a surface for displaying the idea of a hearth.

The wedding portrait on the far wall watches over all of it: the plant, the brass fireplace tools standing at attention, the lamp that is definitely on. The whole room is a 1950s argument that domesticity, given sufficient gold spray paint, could be elevated to something permanent.
