On the image
Someone at thirty thousand feet decided to photograph mountains through an airplane window coated in dust and moisture. The peaks below—jagged, snow-streaked, utterly indifferent to the observer above—are rendered soft and distant by the optical conditions that make airplane-window landscape photography a reliable way to produce an unusable image. The scratches and water spots on the window are as much a part of the scene as the geology itself, a reminder that what looked clear to the eye becomes milky on film. This is the photograph taken by every passenger who has ever thought the view was worth capturing and then forgotten about the result entirely.
The historian's note
High-altitude color slide photography from aircraft became routine after the 1940s as commercial aviation expanded and color film stocks improved. The blue color cast and haziness are consistent with Kodachrome or Ektachrome film shot through window glass under high-altitude atmospheric conditions. The attempt to photograph landscape from a moving aircraft represents a persistent amateur impulse—the desire to record beauty encountered in travel—that produced far more material than lasting images, as the physical barrier between camera and subject (window glass, altitude, aircraft movement, atmospheric haze) defeats most such efforts. This slide exemplifies the archival abundance of these unsuccessful attempts.
