10機のスウェプトウイング・ジェット機が、定規で引いたような正確な鼻尾直線に並んでいる。各機は同じ赤白青のペイントを纏っており、まるで個性が保守上の欠陥であるかのようだ。白いキャップをかぶった2人の将校が、これらの前の横置き通路を歩いている。彼らの歩き方には、機体がみずからの指示があるまで動かないことを知る男たちの、急かされない権威がある。タルマックの水たまりは嵐が通り過ぎたばかりであることを示唆しているが、制服を着た誰もが気に留めているようではない。天気は下士官の心配事だからである。
これはジェット時代の空軍の文化が最も映真的に現れた時代だった。North American F-100 Super Sabres、その時代の働き手戦闘機は、自動車販売店が駐車場に車を並べるのと同じ注意深さで検査のために配置されていた。展示されている前提は、このように統一され、磨かれ、完璧に間隔を置かれた艦隊は、単なる飛行では決して達成できない準備態勢を示すというものである。それら機体の後ろのどこかで、基地はスケジュール、チェックリスト、地上の秩序が空中での能力に直結するという静かな信念の上で運営されている。
この列の横を歩いている2人の男は、すべての軍隊が常に誰かに割り当ててきた仕事をしている。それは高価な機械の前をゆっくり歩き、他の人々がそれが世話されていると信じさせることだ。おそらくそうだったのだろう。しかし、この写真はそれを証明することはできない。
