1960年代、誰かが十億年前の花崗岩の塊の山には舗装された見学路が必要だと判断し、その結果がここにある。配送トラックほどの大きさの石の間を進む一握りの来園者たち。教会のためにというより、岩の上を這い回るために着替えていない。岩自体は目的地になったことなど気にしていない。公園がこれらの岩にちなんで名付けられることを誰も考える遙か前から、これらの滑らかなピンク色の塊に丸くなり続けているのだ。
人々は故意に矮小化されているが、誰も意図的にそれを仕組んだわけではない。歴史的標識を読んで、地質学が説明されたと考えているかのような落ち着いた自信で、ショルダーバッグを持つ男が歩き過ぎる。樹木限界線のはるか向こう、Missouri州のOzark丘陵は、さらに六十年は保つであろう全く同じ森の緑色で起伏している。観光バスなど意にも介さず。
これは責任放棄の署名について誰も心配する前の家族での外出がどのような様子であったかを示す。花崗岩を登っている子どもたち、その下でカメラを携えて散歩している両親、十億年間の気象を生き残った岩が観光客の午後も生き残ることができると誰もが信頼していた。
