スーパーマーケットの駐車場にはランドマークが必要だと誰かが決断し、その解決策は、市民的記念碑のように交通島に植えられた背の高い彩色トーテムポールであった。太平洋岸北西部の先住民の形式を借りて、平坦で森林に覆われた、明らかに沿岸ではない地域で食品を広告している。これは1960年代のショッピングプラザにおいて見世物として通用した、確信に満ちた文化的混合の例である。

ロット全体では、Food Martの看板が実際の販売を行い、一方、ページの屋根を持つ東屋は第二の借用モチーフを加えている。なぜなら、一つのエキゾチックな装飾が客を引き寄せるなら、二つはさらに多く引き寄せるはずだからである。駐車スペースに鼻を突っ込んでいる自動車は、その時代のコンパクトでクロムで装飾されたセダンであり、20年後もロットがそこにあると期待する人々の落ち着いた確信を持って駐車されている。

The historian's note

1960年代の北米のロードサイド商業建築は、新しく建設された高速道路回廊を通過する運転手の目を引くことを意図した視覚的マーケティングの形式として、誇張されたまたは借用された装飾要素を頻繁に使用していた。トーテムポール動機、ページの屋根の線、およびその他のスタイル化された装飾品は、採用されたイメージへの地域的または文化的つながりに関わらず、この時代のショッピングセンターとスーパーマーケットで使用される一般的なデバイスであった。

シーンは、Food Mart、ブランドのスーパーマーケットを軸としている小さな商業プラザを描写している。これは、戦後の期間における郊外および高速道路隣接地の急速な拡大を示す一種の連鎖食品店である。駐車場、造景交通島、およびアーケード構造は、建築的一貫性よりも自動車アクセスと視覚的標識を優先した、20世紀半ばのストリップモール設計の典型的なものである。
