誰かがこの川の区間に番号をつける必要があると判断した。男は三脚に取り付けられた水準測量機に身を乗り出し、水辺から崖面の「PR」と「N」と書かれた塗装されたマークに向かって照準を合わせている。その種のベンチマークは、野生の渓谷を政府帳簿のひとつの行項目に変えるものだ。第二の人物は彼の背後で半分影に立ち、スタッフまたは下げ振りを持ち、完成した報告書には決して現れない地味な仕事をしている。
崖自体は測量班のキャリアより長い時間をかけてゆっくりと溶解し、再び堆積してきた。その縞状の凝灰岩の表面は、誰の許可もなく記録された履歴である。二人の男は秋までに異なる水位を測定しており、1960年代の確信に満ちた仮定である、フィールドノートに書き込まれた数字は永久的と見なされるという思い込みの下にある。これが水文学の特有の虚栄心である。自然はゴールポストを動かし、測量士は目を逸らしたときに彼らがどこに立っていたかを記録する。
数十年後、政府事務所の誰かがこの正確なベンチマークを引き出し、川が独自の考えを持っていることにわずかに驚くだろう。
