男性と女性が、教会や結婚式のため、そしてどうやらガソリンスタンドのためにも取っておかれた種類のよそ行きの服を着てカメラの前に立っている。頭上では赤と黄のペナント旗の天蓋がはためいている――20世紀半ばの商人たちが、通り過ぎる客と立ち寄る客を分けるものだと信じていた、あの宣伝様式である。背後にはシェルの看板が、五十年後も自分は重要であり続けるはずだと前提していたブランドらしい穏やかな威厳をもって輝いている。そして、合併の一つや二つを別にすれば、実際その通りになった。

カップルの背後には、チェリーレッドとクリームのツートンカラーのセダンが停まっている――男が近所の人々に何かを証明するために買ったような種類の車で、駐車場での接触事故訴訟がまだ発明されていなかった時代らしい、無頓着な自信をもって駐車されている。旗のすぐ先にはドラッグストアが並びの一角を占め、複合施設全体が、アメリカ人は常に車で行く新しい場所を必要とするという理論のもとに築かれたショッピングセンターらしい、こぎれいな楽観主義をもって配置されている。

女性のキャッツアイ眼鏡とピルボックス帽、男性の半袖シャツと巻いたタバコの箱は、この二人が自分たちを未来そのものだと完全に確信していたカップルであることを示している。彼らはおよそ十年間は正しかった――ファッションの尺度では、それは圧勝と呼ぶべきものである。
