誰かが幾多の午後を費やし、この石を積み上げて壁を築いた。その壁が辿る境界線は、これを築いた農民以外の誰にも見えるものではない。アンデス高地においてこの種の壁は装飾ではなかった。家畜をジャガイモ畑から締め出し、坂の下に住む隣人との避けられない境界争いの際に所有者が指し示す拠り所となった。

柵の支柱に沿って一列に並ぶユーカリの木々は、この谷にも、この地域の記憶が及ぶ限りの時代にも本来存在しなかった木である。1900年代初頭、成長の早い木材と防風林として、コロンビア高地一帯に輸入・植林されたものだが、その施策があまりに功を奏したため、今ではこれらの木がずっとそこにあったかのように見える。その下では湖が貯水池としての静かな役目を果たし、対岸に見える耕作地のパッチワークに水を供給している。水利管理とは、誰も好んで写真に収めることのない、地味なインフラ事業の一つである。

右手の生の土の切り通しの近くには、淡い色の衣服をまとった人物が一人立ち、その日湖畔まで彼を運んだささやかな用事をこなしている。八十年後に誰かがこの石壁を仕事として研究することになろうとは、彼の与り知らぬことである。
