この画像は米国南西部に特徴的な広大な砂漠の風景を描いており、特に遠くのメサと近いバッドランズに見られる色の層状の帯は、ArizonaのPainted Desertなどの環境を示唆しており、これはPetrified Forest National Parkに大部分が含まれている。
1970年代は国内観光の増加を目撃し、国立公園とモニュメントはより多くの訪問者を経験した。このような風景は、地域の独特の自然美を捉えようとするアマチュア写真家の間で人気のある被写体であった。
