The historian's note

内陸西部の高砂漠盆地—オレゴン、アイダホ、ネバダ、ユタの一部を含む地域—は、アメリカ地質調査所と州観光局によって実施された地質調査、観光促進、記録的プロジェクトの一部として1950年代に広く撮影されていた。セージブラッシュの植生、内部排水盆地、山脈によって特徴付けられるこれらの風景は、地質学的関心とアメリカ農業開拓の限界の両方を表していた。そのような写真に見える乏しい人間基盤—灌漑または地下水に依存する孤立したランチ集落と小さな町—は、乾燥性が人口分布に与える制約を示していた。1940年代に広く導入されたカラートランスパレンシーフィルムは、これらの調査を視覚的に特徴的にし、科学記録と20世紀中盤の雑誌および旅行出版物の新興カラー写真メディアの両方を支援した。そのような画像における自然色の保存は、文書保管および宣伝の両方の目的のために価値があるとされていた。
