揺るがぬ権威を示すために設計された大きな石造宮殿は、城塁のある塔に時計を備えており、何世紀も過ぎてきたものの気だるい無関心さで時刻を刻んでいる。建物の精緻な石積みと要塞化された窓は、おそらく税金についての意見を守ってきた歴史を示唆している。
おそらく1970年代の観光旅行の最中に捉えられた誰かが、車の窓か正体不明の前景物を通してこれを撮影した。これは、いかなる壮大な歴史的ランドマークでさえ、現代旅行の即座で不明瞭な要求に対処せざるを得ないことを証明している。結果は一瞬を捉えるということについての宣言であり、その瞬間が準備ができていたかどうかは関係ない。

The historian's note
この画像はPrince's Palace of Monaco（Palais Princier de Monaco）の一部、特に時計塔とその正面玄関の一部を描いている。地中海を見下ろす目立つ岩盤に位置するこの宮殿は、1297年以来Grimaldi家、モナコの皇太子の公式な住居である。
元々ジェノヴァの砦であったこの構造は、何世紀にもわたって多数の改造と拡張を経ており、その防衛的な起源にルネッサンス建築とバロック建築の要素を組み込んでいる。目に見える石積みと設計は、これらの歴史的層を反映している。
1970年代までに、この宮殿はモナコ公国の重要なシンボルであり続け、国家の行政センターと統治君主の私邸の両方として機能していた。その長い歴史と王室との関わりに関心のある観光客を一貫して引き付けていた。
