峡谷の壁は、人間の目的に対する地質学特有の何気ない無関心をもって滝を縁取っている。1950年代、アメリカ人は西部内陸部を一種の公園地帯として扱い始め、峡谷へ車を乗り入れ、水辺に立って、壮大さがなお存在し、それを自分の目で確かめたことを確認していた。誰かがカメラを配置し、石灰岩と影の間に挟まれた滝を捉えた構図は、自動車クラブのスライド上映会や家族の旅行アルバムに収まるであろう類の一枚――わざわざ来るだけの価値がある場所に行ったという証拠――として読み取れる。水蒸気は光を捉えて画面の中で青く変わるが、これは露出と鉱物成分がもたらすトリックであり、実際以上に峡谷を冷たく、写真映えするものに見せている。こうした場所への観光は、自然が常設展示物であり、カメラを持ってそこにいること自体がそこにいる目的である、という前提の上に成り立っていた。

The historian's note

アメリカ西部における峡谷観光は、1950年代の戦後、自動車保有率、幹線道路網、休暇日程の整備により、中流階級の旅行者が遠隔地の自然地形にアクセスできるようになったことで劇的に拡大した。滝や地質学的地形の撮影は休暇記録の標準的な要素となり、カラースライドフィルムによって家族はこうした旅を保存し、後に近隣住民に上映することができた。ここに見られる発色と彩度――特に影のかかった岩を背景に捉えられた落水の強い青――は、当時のアマチュアカラー写真を席巻していたコダクロームおよび類似のリバーサルフィルムと一致する。こうした光景はしばしば景勝ドライブルートや定番の展望地点を経て訪れられ、風景写真は専門的な追求というより参加型の余暇の一形態となっていた。
