誰かが完全な装甲戦車隊と一式の行進楽団を完璧な閲兵式の順序で配置した。その中で最も背の高いものでも靴箱より小さい。模型の街路に沿って戦車が並ぶその有様は本物の抑止力のような厳粛さを備えているが、それらが与える最大の脅威はせいぜい鳩に対するものである。この場面を設営した者は、軍事的威光儀式を実物大版と全く同じ真剣さで扱っていたが、野心は25分の1で、危険はゼロだ。
背後のレンガ造りの建物は窓枠に至るまで再現されている。オランダの市民的誇りは建物が縮尺されたからといって縮小されるわけではないのだ。ミニチュアの群衆が柵の傍らに佇むのは、何か月も前から出番を待つパレードを待つかのようだが、実際にはここの何ものも行進することはない。これは国防の最も整然とした形態である。恒久的に配置され、恒久的に危険のなく、恒久的に時間に正確だ。
その時代の来園者は形成全体を無関心な気象神のように見下ろし、そこが楽に見守れる高さから国を築く意味なのだろう。兵隊たちは変わらず隊列を保つ。樹脂製だからだ。そして短パンを履いた観光客に階級で劣るることについて何の意見も持たない。
