この用水路の土手にいた誰かが、漕ぐなり歩くなりするのを止めて、この静けさ、この直線性、この都合の良さが本来あるはずのない水に向けてカメラを向けた。川のように流れるのは川のように建設されたからだが、定規で引いたように真っ直ぐな土手と等間隔に並んだ木々が真実を明かしている。これは用水路であり、イギリス人そして後のパキスタン人技術者がパンジャブ・シンド平原に敷設した大規模灌漑ネットワークの一部であり、砂漠を農地に変えるために、人工の水路を一つずつ建設したものである。
低い日干し煉瓦造りの構造物が樹木に半ば隠れるようにして立ち、こうした水路各地に散在していた用水番人の詰所あるいは休憩所の類である。百マイルに及ぶ流動する水には絶え間なく静かな監視が必要という理論に基づいて、いつでも公務員が近くにいるようにするためだった。小さな人影がその近くに立って、1960年代の稼働中の用水路で平凡な午後を満たすようなありふれた仕事に従事している。カメラを持った観光客がこの風景は時代を超えて見えると判断したことなど知る由もなかった。
しかしそれは時代を超えたものではない。設計され、管理され、維持されているのである。だからこそ、これほど平穏に見えるのだ。
